Maltby and Curtiss Co .32 SW Short Caliber Revolver

Maltby & Curtiss Co .32 S&W short caliber revolver. This is a Metropolitan Police model. This revolver is a 5 shot in 32 S&W Short caliber. Being quite unique, the rear sight slides back and locks the hammer down acting as a safety. Marked “Metropolitan Police” on top of barrel. Ornate hard rubber grips.  I've only seen a couple of these in my lifetime. They're pretty scarce and Flayderman's Guide to Antique Firearms only lists only one variant of the Maltby name with no mention of this specific company or model.  The left side of the barrel is marked:

MALTBY, CURTISS & CO. NEW YORK, U.S.A..
PAT APR 23 78 AUG 28, 83

The Maltby Curtis Co. was formed from the bankrupt Norwich Arms Co in the 1870’s.  Considerable information is to found in “Pistols of the World” page 203, by Hogg & Walters. What a unique little revolver this is! (Item D021)
